Having grown up in the city of Berlin, I discovered water as a way to experience calm and depth. I share these experiences in my courses.
Movement and water have always been an important part of my life. After trying out various sports as a child and teenager, holistic concepts with depth became increasingly important to me. This led me to discover the movement practices of Joseph Bartz & Ido Portal, Stretch Therapy, and a non-dualistic practice of Daoism. Eventually, freediving came into the picture. Freediving combines many elements that interest me: its introspective nature, the tranquillity found only underwater, the awareness of one’s breath, the fluidity of movements.
In freediving, the psychological component plays a very significant role. Depth and breath-hold duration can easily be measured in numbers. However, what quickly happens is that the focus shifts from one’s own experience to the result. This can rapidly create tension that gets in the way of freediving or even prevents it. Internal tension and the pressure are issues I have encountered frequently in my life. Consequently, it has become a priority for me to address these and find ways to manage them.
The key to freediving lies in relaxation, the calm that arises when you feel at ease and trust both your surroundings and yourself. Internal processes relating to emotions – such as fear – and one’s general mental state greatly affect the experience. For me, this is both the reason for my interest in the activity and a challenge in my own practice as well as in teaching.
I have been teaching since 2016, developing my own concepts – initially focusing on movement, breathing and flexibility, and since 2020 on freediving. When teaching, I see my role as giving my full attention to students and the situation, being present to accompany them as they discover the underwater world, whilst sharing my own experiences.
